Summer is almost over, but that shouldn't mean we have to say goodbye to smoothies just yet. I plan on making smoothies a regular part of my diet - the afternoon snack I rush to blend after starving the last 2 hours of school.
Like I said in previous posts- I'm on a sugar cleanse so I don't like to add extra sugar to things that I eat. Thankfully, smoothies accommodate my needs perfectly and give me the guilt-free sugar rush I crave. I've never added any sweetener to the smoothies I've made and each one of them tastes delicious just the same. I think the lack of added sugar lets me differentiate the flavor of individual fruit in the smoothie instead of concentrating on an overpowering sweetness. So while you're free to throw in a dash of agave or a sprinkle of coconut sugar, I encourage you to try to drink it without the extra ingredients and just enjoy the refreshing fruit.
Couple of notes:
- The more milk you put in, the more diluted the flavor. I usually try and keep the milk to 1/2 - 3/4 cup just so that the fruit has enough liquid to blend properly. Instead, I use lots of ice to give the smoothie substance
- Be patient with the blending! Fruits like apples are particularly difficult to blend so if your blender isn't cooperating, turn it off, give the mixture a quick stir, and try again.
