After you've tried homemade hummus, you'll never be able to stomach the store bought one again. It's one of those DIYs that I'm convinced is worth the hassle. Easy prep, easy clean up, and satisfyingly delicious. Spread it on sandwiches, use it as a dip, or eat it with grilled meat. It's impossible to get wrong.
Couple of suggestions : Tahini is awesome. It makes the hummus rich and creamy. Add a tablespoon more if you want a nutty flavor (highly recommended)
- Most recipes call for at least 1/3 cup olive oil but adding oil physically hurts me so I compensated by adding more tahini and water to even out the texture and taste.
- Don't burn the red pepper flakes when you're cooking them in the oil. It happens easily and when it does, all you'll taste is charcoal in your hummus.
- Eat your hummus within a week and a half or so - otherwise it starts to taste funny.
Other add ins : roasted pine nuts, sun dried tomatoes, roasted sesame seeds, raisins, parsley

To prepare:
- Heat olive oil in a small pan and add garlic cloves and red pepper flakes.
- Cook the garlic and pepper in the oil until the garlic browns evenly and the red pepper starts to darken.
- In a food processor, add garbanzo beans, tahini, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and chilli powder.
- Process until the beans are in small pieces, and then add the olive oil with garlic and red pepper.
- Keep processing until the beans turn into a paste. Add water to adjust consistency and thin out the hummus. I added about 1/3 cup of water.
- Wash and chop the cilantro roughly. Add the cilantro to the hummus but DO NOT PROCESS. Just encorporate the cilantro into the hummus with a spatula.
- Enjoy!
